Lowering Expectations ≠ Peace

“If you have no expectations, you’ll never be disappointed.”

I used to think that sounded wise. Safe. Mature, even.

But sitting with it now, it feels like a quiet resignation—like choosing emotional survival over honest living.

I didn’t stop expecting because I became enlightened.

I stopped expecting because I was tired.

Tired of carrying responsibility alone.

Tired of initiating conversations I didn’t want to have.

Tired of hoping someone would meet me where I was, only to feel let down again.

So I adapted. I lowered the bar. I told myself it was peace.

But it wasn’t peace—it was burnout and muddy water.

And then came the moment that undid me.

When I needed me the most, I had nothing left to give.

Not because it was taken—but because I no longer wanted to give.

Not because God hadn’t supplied—but because I had spent everything trying to outrun disappointment instead of bringing it to Him.

Still, there was no rebuke.

Only grace.

Grace that spoke gently.

Grace that reminded me, “I’m keeping you fresh.”

Grace that said rest was allowed—necessary, even.

And there will be time for questions and regret.

But not now.

Now is for lacing up boots.

Putting on the backpack.

And moving forward—not in striving, but in trust.

I don’t need to understand the whole process to obey the next step.

I don’t need to be emotionally armored to be faithful.

And I don’t need to abandon expectation to avoid disappointment—because my hope isn’t fragile when it’s anchored in Christ.

If this resonates, hear this clearly:

  1. Burnout is not a failure of faith.

  2. Avoidance is not the same as peace.

  3. And seeking rest in God = rest and preparation.

May the Holy Spirit breathe life back into tired places.

May faith be resurrected—not by force, but by grace,

and according to His Word.

In Jesus Christ’s mighty name, Amen.

Lowering Expectations Isn’t the Same as Peace.
